Summit Theatre Group is please to announce auditions for APPROPRIATE. Fresh off its acclaimed Broadway revival and 2024 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, APPROPRIATE took New York by storm – and now we bring this explosive, darkly, funny, razor-sharp drama to our stage.

Every estranged member of the Lafayette clan has descended upon the crumbling Arkansas homestead to settle the accounts of the newly-dead patriarch. As the three adult children sort through a lifetime of their father’s hoarded momentos and junk, they collide over clutter, debt and a contentious family history. But after a disturbing discovery surfaces among their father’s possessions, the reunion takes a turn for the explosive, unleashing a series of crackling surprises and confrontations.

AUDITION DATES:

Tuesday, March 17th: 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Wednesday, March 18th: 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM

AUDITION INFORMATION:

The cast will be chosen from the two days of auditions ONLY. NO roles have been precast. If a casting director decision cannot be made, an additional audition date will be announced.

Auditions will consist of audition monologues from the script; meaning you will have some time to review it, read over it a few times and define your character.

Please see further important audition information from the director here: TRICKS OF THE TRADE

WHAT TO PREPARE/BRING:

  • Download and complete the audition form here: AUDITION FORM
  • Bring the audition form plus a headshot with you to the audition.
  • Please list ALL OF YOUR CONFLICTS within the dates of March 24 to April 13 (no conflicts two weeks from the performance). If you are cast and come up with more conflicts, you may be released from the show. Too many conflicts will keep you from rehearsal and those “unexpected, just came up” conflicts can hinder the production and what you have time to learn. This will be at the director’s discretion. Some conflicts are excusable and any listed after a certain date may be workable but keep these to a minimum so we can get the most from every rehearsal and have a quality production. We have very little time to rehearse and your attendance is VERY IMORTANT.

REHEARSALS:

  • Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, March 24th and will typically be Mondays through Friday evenings.

APPROPRIATE CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

The ages listed for each character is a range only. If you are under the age range that you want to audition for but can play older and vice versa, that will be taken into casting consideration.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a large amount of adult language and adult situations in this show. If you cannot say the language in the show (or feel uncomfortable begin onstage when it is said), please reconsider auditioning. The script will not be cut and will be played for the full intensity of the scenes and character background and development.

Antoinette “Toni” Lafayette: The assertive and headstrong oldest sibling, eager to take charge. She is the fierce protector of her deceased father’s reputation and a complicated woman struggling with her own history. She argues with the family aggressively yet passionately to defend her family’s honor. Late 40s/early 50s.

Rhys Thurston: The more reserved nephew of Toni, who has his doubts about the family’s past. He is accused of being in love with her own cousin, but he is still trying to find himself and who he wants to become. Late teens.

Beauregard “Bo” Lafayette: Toni’s brother, who often seeks to keep peace among the siblings. He stands as a voice of rationality amidst chaos, mediating tensions but also grappling with his own feelings of inadequacy. Mid to late 40s.

Rachael Kramer-Lafayette: The practical sister, Bo’s wife, playing a mediating role amidst the chaos. She stands her ground, fueled by maternal instincts to protect her children while confronting the family dynamics that disturb her, mainly Ray’s blatant derogatory references to her nationality. Late 40s.

Cassidy “Cassie” Kramer-Lafayette: The daughter of Rachael and Bo, still trying to find her place within the family. Early teens.

Ainsley Kramer-Lafayette: Rachael and Bob’s youngest son. He runs through the house a lot and causes commotion. A child.

Francois “Franz” Lafayette: Youngest sibling and brother of Toni and Bob. He grapples with his identity as he confronts his father’s legacy and his reputation as a “child sex offender.” His journey from guilt to seeking redemption highlights the complication of familiar love and trauma. Late 30s/early 40s.

Trisha (River) Rayner: Franz’s fiancee who tries to be the voice of reason. Early 20s.
